Choumeti

Mirese Choumetics are very few in number indeed, being the keepers of traditional Mirese spirituality largely abandoned a century ago. Their faith is passed down, and there are no more than a dozen practicing Choumetics in all of Borra.

Philosophy

The Choumetics believe that the world is made from the interaction of two forces, choumeh (KOO-muh) and femieh (FAY-mee-uh).

Choumeh is the timeless essence. It understands all things and all moments. Where Choumeh reigns, all moments in time are the same; there is no difference between the concept of a thing and the thing itself; understanding and being are one. Choumeh is knowledge, peace and stability, but it is also eternity, cold, and darkness.

Femieh is the radical essence. Where Femieh reigns, all is change. With each instant, the way of things is undone and rendered anew, and all things are transformed. Femieh is brightness, vitality, and warmth; it is also division, chaos, and destruction. Femieh's presence in the world is felt most obviously through the sun's light and warmth.

While acknowledging the balance, Choumetics bargain with the choumeh, manipulating the destiny of those they protect to aid them and bring them success.

Rites

There are no shrines or temples in Choumeti, for the traditional site of Choumeti worship and rites was the communal hearth.

Choumeti would bless children, intercede on behalf of the ill, fortell auspicious times to fish or hunt, and warn of terrible weather.

Legendary Rites

Legends passed down orally, speak of powerful choumetics whose whisperings could wind the threads of destiny. Their appeals could save the dying, or shield a village from the eastern hurricane winds, and their keen sight could spot those whom fate had favoured. Some could shape the destiny of others, blessing or cursing them, or could free a man from his fate with word.
