Subrania

For nearly a century, the patriarchs of the Hantosha family have ruled over the one-time imperial province of Borra - and it is now nearly ruined as a result. Under their cruel and misguided tyranny, its institutions have crumbled and its people broken. Foreign mercenaries roam the outlands, sacking and looting as they please, and an ever-increasing tide of refugees from the outer boroughs threatens to overwhelm the capital. And now, as has not happened since before the founding of the Temple, the children have begun to disappear.

The world of Subrania combines elements of high and low fantasy: the magical and monstrous both exist, but they're outside the realm of every day experience - its heroes and adventurers are often ordinary people who have been drawn from a mundane life by unusual circumstances.

I'm striving to build a setting that emphasizes authenticity over originality, and through it to explore themes more subtle than simplistic notions of good and evil - the mixing of different cultures, the conflict between changing values and traditions, and trying to survive in a world that's wondrous and fantastic, but every bit as awful, confusing, beautiful, and beset with moral ambiguity as real life.
